Getting the most out of short rides?
« on: June 11, 2012, 10:45:45 AM »
Hey all,

I'm a college guy who rides recreationally most of the time. Unfortunately, I've noticed my weight, strength, and stamina slipping because I haven't had as much time to get to the gym. Long story short, I've tried to start riding a little more and use that as my primary method of getting back in shape.

What do you guys do to get the most out of shorter rides? Like I said, time is kind of a premium and whatever methods you have would certainly help! My buddy does MMA and uses something called an elevation training mask, so I pre-ordered the new version of it on Fundable. I have high hopes that it will work as advertised. Do you have any experience with products like this?

Thank you!

10 x $13,000 = $130,000.  For that we can fly all the SB participants to train in real high altitude places.  :-)

I doubt they have any SWAMP discounts built in lol you are welcome to try and contact them I suppose. But I suspect you are mostly just insinuating that I am spamming, which I can see why you'd get that impression. I'll delete the link in the original post, I just thought it would help you understand what I meant if you saw the product as well

I've deleted my spam comment.  Your post didn't seem real.  I don't have $13K to dish out in some training gizmo.  But if I did, I rather fly out to the real altitude and train for that kind of money.

When you say shorter rides what sort of time frame are you talking about?  Which trails are closest to you?

Regardless of how long you have to ride or where you ride...try riding with those faster than you.  Trying to keep up will help whip you into shape pretty fast.

SandPine, I believe the 13k is what they have raised so far (Fundable is sort of like Kickstarter) and not how much the product costs - you can preorder for ~$75 I think.

As for my time frame, at most I can devote 2 hours a day and usually in the morning, and haven't really explored any trails since moving to Columbus

I'm guessing http://www.fundable.com/training-mask.

Personally before dropping the $75 for the mask I would checkout some research on altitude training. A lot of people say you should "live high" and "train low." The thought being if you are training at "altitude" you can't put out much of a performance to stimulate your body. If you live at altitude your body adjusts and if you can train "low" you have plenty of oxygen to push yourself.

Athletes sleep in hypobaric chambers, but don't generally wear a mask to train.

Quick Google search found:
http://www.sportsci.org/traintech/altitude/wgh.html

Sean Sherk was successful because he trained hard and takes roids, not because he wears a mask.  ;D

At the very least, wearing that mask would make you look bad-arse on the trail (or at least look like someone who has an unhealthy fascination with Hanibal Lector).

Could'nt the same results be achieved by pushing the pace?

Asphyxiation mask is awesome.  Think I may try this out with plastic bags.

High altitude climbers agree completely. Oxygen depletion doesn't do anything to help performance or training, it's only a tool or acclimatization.

And that mask made me think of this:
