Cracked Ellsworth Frame
« on: October 24, 2009, 03:08:04 PM »
My buddy cracked his Ellsworth at Santos and is wondering what he should do short of buying a new frame. What say you Ellsworth type people?

It is an 05 ID and I've heard on here before that they had issues. He is the second owner and I'm pretty sure he didn't get the original reciept.

Not positive, but in talking to Art (North) who is a mechanic at UBC, you cant get a warranty replacement unless you are the original owner on any bike manufacturer BUT if you work at a bike shop it may be possible.

As I understand it you can get crash replacement from most manufacturers, which is a discounted price on the replacement frame.  It helps to have the bike shop do this one for you as they have more pull in a situation like this.  Especially if you frequent your LBS.   ;)

Maybe he can get with the original owner to see if he can get warranty replacement for him.   ;)

He has only had the bike for a few months and it was not cracked before as he is a neat freak to the point of installing tire dressing and cleaning with a tooth brush. I suppose it could have had a very tiny start of a crack that the original owner spotted but I imagine he would have just warrantied it since it was purchased new and is barely used. When my friend got it you could barely tell that the bike had been ridden.

He is trying to contact the original owner and if not I'll take it down to Aj's for advice on crash replacement. From what I recall the discount is pretty lame. If nothing will work I'll take it to an ace aluminum welder and see what happens if he keeps both wheels on the ground. He is in the over 40yrs old group so doesn't have much interest in jumping. The three little Vortex drops were calling his name the other weekend though  >:(  I know you can't expect to have much luck without proper heat treating but I've heard a few stories about repaired frames that make it another year or longer if not ridden hard.

that sucks Catman.. my biggest fear since I am 265lbs is breaking a frame... I may look into a Turner just due to the warranty! Are they the only ones that do that?

Yes, the Turner warranty is transferable.

OK, looked it up. The frame warranty is only 2 years anyway. would not of helped in this situation. Both Ellsworth and Turner are 2 years...
