I understand wheel building is an art and from the praise of the crowd, I'm sure Abner is a master craftsman.  My lean toward the I9's is that the technology involved is a new paradigm.  Straight pull one piece large diameter spokes eliminate the weak points of traditional systems, like the j-bend and the threads into the nipple.  They will also build them to your ride style and weight, call them and at least have a chat.  You get extra spokes free with the wheels so you will never be out ride time waiting for in house parts.  Whats not to like... Yes they are loud, so are Kings. Ride faster and the wind noise will make up the difference.  I have seen nothing but the best of reviews, read the latest issue of Bike "Jewelry-grade design, surgical execution and the best freehub body in the industry (there I said it) makes these an easy choice."  After riding Markam, Santos and our local technical sections, I will say that the instant inguagement has given me more control in the tight technical areas than I thought possible.  I just don't think one can build a better conventional wheel.

The I nines are nice but get a deraleur in on when you are out of town and you will cuss them! A fragile wheel in my opinion. Go with the Kings. I have been on the same set since 2001 and just had them rebuilt for the first time by Art and he said they were still in nice shape. Another thing is the replacement spokes on the nines are ten bucks a piece! Ouch!! But they are pretty! More for a hard core racer.

I9's are nice, but I like the peace of mind I get by knowing that I can get my wheel fixed by virtually any decent bike shop virtually anywhere without having to bring my own parts.  That said, I'd run a set of I9's on my XC bike as that one I rarely take out of town, but wouldn't even consider them on my big bike that I take out west to the mountains.

I don't like having to use propietery parts - if they are working they are great...but I like being able to have easy repairs if needed and have all the parts readily available

Hope hubs are IMO probably the best deal out there.  Not very expensive, easy to service/rebuild and durable.  The front hub converts to bolt thru in a snap and converting the rear hub is almost as easy.

I also like the DT Swiss 240's I have on my second set of wheels.  I don't have as many miles on them as I do the hopes but they have been worry free.

From what I've read, Hope's engagement is note quite like Kings but better than Shimano - keep in mind they do come at a sizeable discount relative to Kings.

Not as fast as the kings.  Though I will tell you that after the first mile I did not notice the difference.  For my style of riding the engagement factor is just not that big of an issue.

If I did my math right
King = 5 degree engagement
Hope = 10 or 15 degree engagement (bulb / proII )
I9 = 3 or 6 degree engagement (depending on hub choice)
Most Shimano = 22.5 or 15 degree
DT Swiss = 15 degree


It is important to note that engagement degrees does not in any way = hub strength.  Theoretically a 5 degree hub could have one pawl engagement and a 50 degree hub could have 10 pawl engagement.  It is also important to note that King and DT are ratchet style hubs.
