Just had a set of Mavic XC717 rims laced to Hope pro 2 hubs with Supercomp spokes. $600. Don't forget truing down the road which you will need if you are riding off road, you will never pay Abner to true one of his wheels :)

That is true!

I didn't buy my wheels from him, however; he trued and balanced them better than when they were new, he tied and soldered the spokes, and replaced the bearings with PhilWood bearings.....They roll and roll and roll......... They are also very responsinve.

I just dropped my son's bike off for a tune up. I have seen him do a tune up, everything is completely taken apart and cleaned lubed where appropriate, and reassembled and adjusted.

I am sure that there are other shops that do this, but the more typical procedure is less intensive.

I'm in need of a wheelset and have been thinking about calling good ol' Abner and having him build me a set. Anyone know what the average cost of one of his custom built wheelsets are?

depends on which hubs/rims/spokes combo you want....$5-750ish

I know Abner and his work and I'm sure it is worth every penny of that for a custom set from him.

Thanks for the price estimate, tax return couldn't have come at a better time :D

It sounds like sound advice to go with Abner.  He referenced costs from $540 to $1000 for customs...on the bike/out the door.  I gave him an apporximate budget of $700 and he said I would be freakin thrilled with results.

Another good wheelbuilder is Mike Garcia www.oddsandendos.com
He has reasonable prices and a stellar reputation (and he is also local)

What does abner charge for a complete tune up? I have heard a lot of good things about him from some of you guys I respect. I need to take my bike in really soon.

Thanks!

He is pretty reasonable on tune ups, especially for the detail that he puts in it. Call him.

Abner is worth every penny. Think about it, your life is essentially in his hands and this is how he treats every repair, tune-up, installation.

Here's some advice if you haven't placed your order yet - get the best rear hub you can as it is the way more important than the front and skimp on the front if you have to as all it really has to do is spin.

I love my King rear jubs. I run a lefty fork, so can't use their fronts, but thier rear hubs are awesome.

Just giving him some additional info in case he starts running into budget issues.  I'd go with either a King or Hadle rear hub and just get something like either an XT or Hope (awesome bargain on their front hub) if money was an issue.
